F Is for Family (2015) review

Looking for something to watch I stumbled upon this show with no expectations and really liked it. Its funny, has interesting characters, and unique animation. If you grew up in this 70's or have parents that did you'll love this show. The family lives a basic suburban life set in the 70's. A high moral and short tempered father tries to support his family on a small budget while also trying to gain the respect of bis 14 year old son.. The show has plenty of laughs while still setting a serious tone at some points. Don't watch this show expecting something like family guy or American dad, the humor is much more guided and even manages to teach small life lessons. Netflix Originals have always been solid and then have outdone themselves yet again with F is for Family.

Highly Entertaining!

The first episode started off a little shaky, but after you get through the second (episode) you will be hooked. Don't get me wrong the first episode isn't bad and is really easy to watch,I just didn't find it very funny. Don't worry though, as the show goes on and the characters develop the laughs will start pouring in. hulu blacklist

Overall it's a great show that any fan of Bill Burr will enjoy. For what it is it's very well written as the show follows a story arc.(Which is something most comedic animated series don't usually do) I really hope more episodes are in store, because in my opinion this has the potential of having a very nice run.

Leaves a lot to be desired

Let's get this straight, first off I'm a very big Bill Burr fan from his standup and radio appearances from the last ten or so years and I really do think he's one of the funniest guys working the stage today. Secondly, I'm also a fan of animation and the creative opportunities an animated sitcom can offer writers. Although they're not always hits, animated shows definitely through style or writing, bring their own flair to the screen in ways that aren't possible for live-action shows.

"F is for Family" unfortunately leaves so much to be desired in every department, it's hard to know where to even begin. Let's focus on the characters. I absolutely hate every character on this show. Almost no one is likable, and the only "sane" person in the whole show is the wife character who has to right every wrong of her husband. VERY FRESH AND ORIGINAL!

Speaking of the husband, voiced by Bill Burr, "Frank" is a deadbeat misogynistic, angry, bitter, impulsive father figure who of course treats women horribly and thinks they should be slaves in the kitchen. Of course this show is set in the 1970s so you expect a little of this to come out, but it just comes across as very forced on the show. More post-modern "oh boy isn't the husband so dumb with this backwards opinions, looks like the woman has to show up and save the day!" nonsense that you've all seen on TV dozens of times before this.

The kids also leave a lot to be desired. Kevin, voiced by Justin Long is probably the best of the lot. He nails the pre-teen/teen angst very well and plays the character in an excellent over-the-top way. The daughter Maureen is funny enough as the youngest child, very much a brat, completely coddled and spoiled by her dad. Billy, who is presumably based on Bill Burr as a kid, not so much. Billy just isn't likable in the very least. This is due in part by the characters he interacts with who are horrible "coming of age" clichés -- the over the top leather jacket wearing ginger bully (who turns out to be -- YOU GUESSED IT -- bullied himself by his own dad), the wimpy, closet homosexual friend. And lets not forget the most annoying characters of them all - the poor trailer trash redneck kids who represent some of the laziest writing of the whole series. Don't know how to close a scene? Write some dumb hacky comment by these two about their mom and dad being siblings or how they haven't bathed in a year and you're done. Comedic gold, right!? wrong.

The other characters are decent enough. Besides the German Jewish neighbor who everyone assumes is a Nazi and the INCREDIBLY cheap "dumb fat boss" character, the rest of the cast isn't really that disgusting. Big ups to Sam Rockwell's performance as the rock-n-roll party man Vic who lives next door. He's just the kind of 70's sleaze that you really want more of in the show, without being too overbearing. He acts as a great contrast to Frank's lack of self-worth and self-actualization.

Then we get to the animation, which I'll be very honest DID get better from season 1 to season 2, but really leaves a lot to be desired in the quality department. You can tell they tried to animate this show as cheaply as possible, which isn't so much a burden so much as it's just disappointing at times. Cheap animation works well if it is stylized (Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Tom Goes to the Mayor, etc) but this show is so bland and uninspired that I honestly don't think I could pick it out of a lineup of one.

Now the actual humor of the show is what really let me down the most I gotta say. With all these unlikable characters and poor animation, the jokes are really what should have sold the show. Sadly I just don't find "F is for Family" to be all the funny or entertaining. The humor overreaches with its profanity in ways I still don't understand. I for the life of me don't see how hearing kids say "f*ck" a ton of times is funny to anyone. I'm definitely not a prude (as I said I'm a big fan of Burr's standup and others similar to him) but when writers use profanity without any real reason other than to fill the page, it just comes across as haphazard and lazy. The comedic writing lies so heavily on profanity and shock value that it loses its appeal by the third or so episode. Unfunny and uninspired, I really was expecting more from the show. sicario putlocker

As I said, I'm a huge fan of Burr's work and love animated shows. ALL of me wants to like "F is for Family" right out of the gate. But two seasons later, I can't say I can recommend it to any other fans of Bill or fans of animation. It's simply fails to satisfy on both accounts. What gets me the most about this show is that it really could have been something great. Unfortunately among a near infinite amount of poorly animated, edgy shows, this one sits at the top of the skip pile in my book.

Bleak and smart, but not that funny.

"F is for Family" is another in the long line of animated family comedies in the tradition of "King of the Hill". Compared to its contemporaries the humor is sparse, the family drama grim to the point of being uncomfortable, and the the larger world threateningly accurate. Some bright spots of the show include its biting satire of racism, sexism, and the past in general. Nothing is spared having the layers of nostalgia peeled away in an effort to remind us just how bad the good old days really were. However while it is smart the characters are hard to sympathize with. Gone is the bumbling yet goodhearted family dynamic of shows like "Bob's Burgers" and in its place are angry characters whose actions more often than not cross the line from comic nastiness into actual abusive behavior. However these things all play into the show's mission of showing things how they are. It excels at taking the tropes of shows like "Family Guy", stripping them down and presenting a real world equivalent. Real issues drive the show forward and keep it grounded in reality. In the end "F is for Family" is a realistic, bleak, and darkly comic show masquerading as just another animated comedy.
