123 movies This is a show that I was reluctant to watch a first, but when my 21 year old cousin introduced me to the show I was intrigued by the massive grin on her face stretching ear to ear as I began to watch the show I soon developed the same grin. I want to thank her for introducing me to such a great show I would have otherwise overlooked. I applaud Steven Universe for being one of the better shows I have seen in recent years. It blends action, comedy, and drama in its 11 minute or so episodes better than a lot of blockbuster movies these days. For a show marketed towards a younger audience, Steven Universe has a surprising amount of deep, emotional, and sometimes flat out scary moments. The characters develop extremely well with the exception of a few one-note side characters made to jab at people from certain walks of life with great success. The songs are occasional treats, this coming from a guy who's not too fond of musicals, often used as a vessel to carry characters' feelings. The voice acting is consistently good. Overall, this a show that is fun, has a ton of heart, and shouldn't be judged by its cover as I once made the mistake of doing.
Believe in Steven!

So how about that Steven Universe huh? In case you haven't seen it yet, or are one of those people that hates modern cartoons because they weren't made when you were growing up specifically, Steven Universe is a new-ish, Cartoon Network series created by Rebecca Sugar, who you may remember from writing many emotional episodes and songs from Adventure Time, like the song and episode 'I Remember You' from Season 4. This is my first time reviewing not only an animated TV show, but the first non-video game piece of media I've reviewed ever, so let me know what you think and how I can improve. Yeah, I'm really not feeling those VG reviews right now, I'll get back to them one day, but not today.
Steven Universe is a cartoon about a boy who is born half gem (magic), and half human, and he is protected and taken care of by three other magical aliens known as the Crystal Gems. The show may seem simple at first glance and sound like it can do what it damn well pleases as logic goes out the window when we talk about magical stuff, right? Wrong, Steven Universe and everything about it (aside from the Uncle Grandpa crossover episode) stays set in it's own canon rules of reality, sure there's a lot to take in, but at point does it seem like it's going too over the top with it's own logic, or make you go: Pffft, ONLY IN A CARTOON AMIRIGHT!? The show also gets very complex and story-driven near the later episodes in Season 1, but what I love about this is that it doesn't let the story- driven elements take over, or let the comedy and non-serious nature take over, it's a perfect balance of two which is something I rarely see in shows on Cartoon Network. You'll get more and more emotionally attached to the characters, story and locations as you get more and more into the show to the point were you'll just have to binge out and marathon the darn thing just to see more inclusions to various story-arcs. I also adore the fact that each and every episode adds to a character's personality or to the story even if it's in a small way, no episode slot is wasted, no filler here whatsoever. So how are these characters? Well first we have Steven, a naive, fun-loving, peace-keeping, and idealistic boy who was brought into this world by his mother, a former Crystal Gem, Rose Quartz giving up her physical form and giving her gem to Steven. I love this little guy, he's definitely the comic-relief character, just as likable as early Spongebob and gets sad over the fact that snakes don't have arms. Surprisingly he's the voice of reason and the peace keeper among the gems, he contradicts their usually violent nature and it works really well. It's also fun seeing all the abilities he learns throughout the series, but I won't spoil any of it for you. Then there's the three women of the group, Garnet the quiet, cool one of the group, Amethyst the tom-boy rough-houser of the group that usually does what she wants when she wants, and Pearl is the over-protective, kinda OCD one of the group. They all interact so well and feel all very different from one another, it's great, I couldn't have asked for a better main cast. Secondary characters include Steven's friend Connie, whom is awesome, his father Greg, whom is awesome, the local shopkeepers Lars and Sadie, whom are awesome too. Do you see where I'm going with this? As I said previously all of these characters have their faults but that's what makes them human, or gems, or half-gem half-human little boys. The show embraces these faults and makes them that more enjoyable of character. None of them are one-dimensional either, they all have at least some personality to them even if it's not immediately apparent.
The artstlye is beautiful with simple shapes combined to make truly breath-taking results. The characters expressions always convey emotion very well, Rebecca Sugar really knows what she's doing, she's the one that drew that Ed, Edd n Eddy yaoi you know. The music is also very nice and relaxing when it wants to be, and dramatic and intense when it wants to be too. It seems to usually be either classical piano or chiptune, two very awesome things indeed. The show also has a lot of musical numbers, and there's not a single song that I didn't find charming. A lot of people complain with the 11 minute time limit per episode, but I think it works fine. The never felt rushed and when they need a little extra time, they just make a two-parter, I don't really see what's wrong with this.
Steven Universe is still currently on-going and is 2 seasons and 56 episodes long as of the time this review is written, of which I have seen all, and look forward to what the show has up its sleeve next. Rebecca and the crewniverse have all got it good right now, and to think, I used to think this show was over-emotional and the characters were annoying. Oh how times have changed. I'm not going to give the show a rating as I want my thoughts to speak for themselves, but I'll just state again that I think very highly of this show and it's definitely in my Top 10 Shows as of the moment. All I wanna do it see you turn into a movie, into a mooovie, all I wanna be is the one who gets to see an SU movie. Also dude, that Uncle Grandpa crossover's ending, if you've been a fan of Cartoon Network for a while you'll love it. Steven Universe, a perfect blend of charm, comedy and emotion. Believe in Steven, folks.
Great show that has meaning behind it!

Now I'm a lover of animation so I'm picky when it comes to animated shows. Compared to some of the crap that has been on CN lately this one is actually really well thought out. It is a nice story about a young lad that is respectful and charming. He is taken care of by his father and the gems, who only want him to succeed. The animation is great simple yet creative. The characters memorable and the episodes leave you with a smile. It also teaches life is hard and sometimes we might understand why things are happening but it is important to never give up and stay positive. Recommend this for kids and adults a like.I just hope the network doesn't pull it off the air, cant wait for them to pull that uncle grandpa crap. deadpool full movie putlockers
